String lights are lovely and generally safe — but as electrical products, a few simple precautions keep your home and family protected, especially during festivals when many lights are in use. Here are the essentials.

Use the right lights for the setting

Use indoor-rated lights inside, and weatherproof (IP-rated) lights outdoors. Using indoor-only lights outside, where they meet rain and damp, is a real safety risk.

Check lights before use

Before putting them up, inspect each strand for damaged wires, broken bulbs, or a faulty plug. Don’t use any strand with frayed wiring or visible damage.

Don’t overload sockets

Avoid plugging too many strands or other devices into one socket or extension board. Overloading is a common fire risk, particularly during festivals. Spread the load across sockets.

Choose LED and low-voltage where possible

LED string lights run cooler and use less power than old bulbs, making them safer. Low-voltage, battery, and solar options are safer still, especially around children and outdoors.

Keep away from flammable materials

Don’t drape lights over or near anything that can catch fire — curtains, paper decorations, or dry materials. Give them air and space.

Don’t run wires under rugs or through doorways

Wires pinched in doors or run under carpets can get damaged and overheat. Route cables safely where they won’t be crushed or tripped over.

Switch off when unattended

Turn lights off when you go out or to bed, especially mains-powered ones. A timer can do this automatically. Don’t leave them running unattended for long periods.

Keep plugs and connections dry

Even with outdoor lights, keep plugs and connection points dry and off the ground. Use proper outdoor sockets and protect connections from rain.

Keep children and pets in mind

Keep wires, plugs, and small bulbs out of the reach of young children and pets, and secure strands so they can’t be pulled down.

Store them safely

After the season, switch off, let them cool, coil them neatly (not yanked), and store somewhere dry. Good storage keeps them safe and ready for next time.
