How to Store String Lights Without Tangles

No more tangled lights

We’ve all faced it — pulling out last year’s string lights to find a hopeless, knotted mess. With a little care when packing away, your lights will stay neat and ready. Here’s how, so they also last longer.

Switch off and unplug first

Always switch off and unplug (or remove batteries) before taking lights down. Let them cool if they’ve been on a while.

Take them down gently

Remove lights carefully, without yanking the wire. Pulling hard can damage the wiring and loosen bulbs. Gentle handling keeps them working for years.

Wind them neatly

The secret to tangle-free storage is winding, not bundling. Try:

• Around a piece of card: wrap the strand around a rectangle of stiff cardboard.
• Around a reel or spool: a tidy, classic method.
• Around your hand/elbow: coil into a loose loop and secure it.
• On a coat hanger: wind around the hanger for easy hanging storage.

Secure the ends

Once wound, secure the strand with a twist tie, velcro strap, or clip so it can’t unravel and tangle in the box.

Store sets separately

Keep each strand wound and secured on its own — don’t toss several loose strands into one box together, which is how tangles and knots happen.

Keep them dry and cool

Store lights in a dry place, away from damp and heat. India’s monsoon humidity can affect wiring and connections, so a dry box or cupboard is best.

Use a dedicated box

Keep all your string lights together in one labelled box or container, with their wound strands and any spare bulbs. You’ll always know where they are.

Label by type

If you have several sets (indoor, outdoor, solar, colours), label them so you grab the right one quickly next time.

Check before storing
